Can You Paint Over Wallpaper? When to Remove It and How to Seal It If It Stays
Removing wallpaper is usually the better choice, because paint over paper can loosen old paste and show every seam. Sometimes, though, removal would damage the wall, and painting over sound, well-stuck paper with the right primer is a reasonable option.
When Removal Makes Sense
- Seams are lifting or the paper is bubbling
- The paper is vinyl or textured
- There are several layers
- You want a smooth, high-quality wall
When Painting Over It Can Work
- The paper is firmly stuck everywhere
- It is a single, smooth, paper (not vinyl) layer
- Removal would tear the drywall face, as can happen when paper was hung on unprimed drywall
How to Paint Over Wallpaper
- Re-glue loose edges and seams.
- Skim seams with joint compound if they show.
- Seal with an oil-based or shellac-based primer. Water-based primers can soften the paste and cause bubbles.
- Paint with two coats.
After Removal
Removing paper often leaves adhesive residue and torn drywall paper. Residue must be washed off, and torn paper sealed with a primer made for damaged drywall paper before skim coating and painting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my paint bubbling over wallpaper?
Water in the paint is softening the paste. Seal with an oil or shellac primer.
Is removing wallpaper expensive?
It adds labor, especially with several layers or damaged drywall.
Can textured wallpaper be painted?
It can, but the texture shows; removal is usually better.
Will seams show through the paint?
Often, unless they are skimmed first.
