Fence Staining Guide: Cleaning, Stain Choice, Neighbors and How Long It Lasts
A fence is easier on stain than a deck because water runs off vertical boards instead of sitting on them. Most fences around Matthews and Union County are pressure-treated pine, often six-foot privacy fences that turn gray within a few years of going up.
Clean First
Gray, weathered fibers, mildew on shaded sections and dirt splashed at the base all block stain. A wood cleaner and a gentle rinse, followed by a brightener, bring back the wood color. High pressure raises fuzzy fibers that soak up stain unevenly.
Pick the Stain
- Semi-transparent: shows grain, good for newer fences.
- Semi-solid or solid: evens out gray, patched and mismatched boards, and lasts longer on vertical surfaces.
HOAs often specify fence colors; check before buying stain.
Application
Spraying is fast on picket and privacy fences, but it must be followed by back-brushing to work the stain into the wood and catch drips. Stain the tops of posts and pickets, where water sits. Protect plants, siding, cars and anything near the fence from overspray.
Both Sides
The outside face often faces a neighbor or a common area. Ask the neighbor or HOA for access before the job. If only your side is stained, the two faces will weather differently.
Maintenance
Semi-transparent stain on a sunny fence often lasts several years; solid stain longer. Wash mildew off shaded sections between coats.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does fence stain last?
Usually longer than deck stain, since fences are vertical: several years for semi-transparent, longer for solid.
Can I stain a new fence right away?
Only when the wood passes a water drop test; new treated lumber often needs time to dry.
Should I spray or brush fence stain?
Spray for speed, then back-brush to work it in.
Do I need permission to stain my neighbor's side?
You need access to their yard, so ask first. HOAs may also have fence color rules.
